How Patriena Modeste Is Building a Sustainable Business Around Mental Wellness
Entrepreneurship is often presented as a path to freedom. Less is said about the mental and emotional pressure of building a business while carrying the responsibilities of work, family and everyday life. Patriena Modeste’s journey offers an important reminder: the person behind the business needs care too.
Before becoming a full-time entrepreneur, Patriena spent more than a decade in the corporate world. During the day, she worked her job. After hours, she developed Modest Scentsations, fulfilled orders and explored ideas for its future.
She was also balancing her roles as a wife, mother, woman of faith and student.
Eventually, one question became impossible to ignore:
What if I never give myself the opportunity to find out what I’m capable of?
Patriena left corporate life and committed herself fully to entrepreneurship.
Freedom Came with Responsibility
Like many people starting a small business, Patriena imagined entrepreneurship would give her greater control over her time. What she discovered was a different kind of responsibility.
“Entrepreneurship is not the freedom I thought it was. It is the responsibility of creating the freedom I want.”
She learned that passion could start a business, but it could not sustain one on its own. Building a sustainable business in Trinidad and Tobago required clear decisions, financial discipline and the willingness to recognise when something was no longer working.
For a period, Patriena said yes to almost every opportunity. She created new products, pursued different ideas and tried to keep everything moving. She was busy, but busyness did not always translate into profitability or progress.
The lesson was uncomfortable but necessary: changing direction is not failure. Sometimes, it is leadership.
When Commitment Becomes Consumption
That lesson became especially personal through The Reset Hub, a space Patriena envisioned for people to pause, breathe and reconnect with themselves.
The dream carried deep meaning, but the pressure of maintaining the space began to affect her energy, concentration, relationships and ability to make sound business decisions.
There is a difference between being committed and being consumed.
This became a turning point in both her entrepreneurial and mental wellness journey. Patriena began to understand that rest could not be treated as a reward reserved for after every task was complete. Boundaries, reflection and recovery were necessary parts of doing the work well.
She also recognised that the entrepreneur is one of the business’s most important assets. When that person is exhausted, overwhelmed or constantly operating in survival mode, the business feels the effects.
Her reset was therefore about more than adjusting a business model. It meant becoming more intentional about what she was building and how she wanted to feel while building it.
Supported While Building
Patriena credits her family, faith and business support network with helping her through difficult periods.
She also participated in Youth Business Trinidad and Tobago’s JumpSTART programme. Through business training, mentorship and peer support, she gained tools to assess her ideas more critically and make decisions with greater confidence.
“I built it, but I was supported while building it.”
That support helped her move from pursuing every possibility to focusing on the opportunities most closely connected to her purpose.
From Scent to a Greater Sense of Wellbeing
Modest Scentsations began in 2020 as what Patriena initially understood to be a candle business. Over time, she realised that scent was simply the entry point.
What I really wanted to create was how people feel.
Today, that insight is helping shape the company’s next chapter.
Patriena is developing holistic and preventative mental wellness packages for companies seeking meaningful ways to support their employees. Her vision is to offer experiences that encourage people to step away from constant demands, manage stress more intentionally and make space for rest and reconnection.
The Reset Hub can play an important role in that vision by giving corporate teams access to an environment created specifically for pausing and resetting.
This direction also reflects an important business decision. While Patriena values serving individual clients, corporate wellness packages could create more sustainable revenue while allowing Modest Scentsations to deepen its impact.
For organisations, it presents an opportunity to recognise that employee wellbeing is not separate from performance. People work, communicate and make decisions more effectively when they feel supported as human beings.
Patriena’s story shows that a reset is not an admission of defeat. It can be an act of courage, a business strategy and a commitment to protecting the wellbeing of the person doing the building.
Sometimes, moving forward begins with giving yourself permission to stop, breathe and begin again.
